Phil The Groundhog
Today we can be exceptionally glad that Punxsutawney Phil did not see his shadow. This means that there will be an early spring and only six more weeks of Winter!
The History of Phil
The heritage of Groundhog Day began in Punxsutawney Pennsylvania in the year1887. Created by local business owners and woodchuck trappers, known regionally as the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club. Over the years this annual party of locals in present times draws people from all over the globe.
This tradition with German heritage to celebrate Groundhog Day was brought to Punxsutawney Pennsylvania during the 18th and 19th centuries. These immigrants originally celebrated Candlemas Day, a Christian occasion celebrated when Jesus Christ rose from the dead at the Temple. When the sun comes out on Candlemas, Phil would see his shadow. This meant that there would be six more weeks of Winter. The German people who made this area of Pennsylvania their residence kept this lore alive with the localized animal called the groundhog.
Researching this fascinating creature is a must. They are vegetarians and are incredibly intelligent animals that are deserving of our respect.
